Gelant targets sub-14-minute finish at Boxer Super Run Durban

Elroy Gelant will look to keep the pressure on the Elite Men’s Field by targeting a sub-14-minute finish at the Boxer Super Run in Durban on Sunday, 12 October 2025. In 2024, Gelant secured an impressive 5th place at the same event with a time of 13:49. Precious Mashele took the win in a record-breaking 13:39, followed by Kabelo Mulaudzi (13:40), Chris Mhlanga (13:43), and Luan Munnik (13:44).

“My goal is straightforward: to go under 14 minutes, ideally dipping under 13:50 to keep the pressure on the field,” says Gelant. “The R147 200 prize purse is a real game-changer for a 5km event. It highlights Boxer’s commitment to rewarding elite athletes and growing the sport. The R20 000 for the overall winners is more than just prize money - it helps with essentials like training gear, and even personal dreams like building a home. In a tough profession like ours, incentives like this push us to go harder and also attract top international talent. I’m all for it; it makes the racing even fiercer.”

For Gelant, the 5km distance is “pure magic” - short enough to go all-out, yet long enough to test both speed and endurance.

“For elites like us, it’s a chance to chase personal bests and national records on a flat, fast course like Durban’s,” he adds. “The Boxer Super Run is special because it brings elites and everyday runners together in a vibrant, community-focused atmosphere. It’s not just about speed, but about celebrating running along the promenade with the ocean breeze. And it promotes fitness for all ages, which I love.”

In closing, Gelant offers encouragement to the social runners: “To everyone lacing up for the Boxer Super Run - you’ve got this! Whether it’s your first 5km or your hundredth, arrive with a smile, soak up the energy, and remember that running is about joy, not just the finish line. High-five a stranger, cheer on your wave mates, and celebrate every step. Durban’s energy will carry you through!”

Other elites who have confirmed their participation include Gladwin Mzazi, Andries Sesedi, and Benette Seloyi.

“I entered the Boxer Super Run Durban because it is so well organised,” says Mzazi. “This will be my second time taking part in the race. The event has amazing vibes and excellent marshals along the route. I’m looking forward to strong competition, and my goal is to run under 14:15.”

Sesedi will make his Boxer Super Run debut in Durban. “The Boxer 5km is known for being fast, so I want to deliver my quickest time,” he says. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase my ability as a speed athlete, and I’m excited to aim for a new personal best.”

For Seloyi, the 5km distance is the perfect test of speed. “I’m determined to run a PB on the day,” he says. “Boxer AC is a fantastic team with top runners, especially my friends Kabelo (Mulaudzi), Chris (Mhlanga), and Andries (Sesedi).”

“We’re excited to welcome Elroy Gelant back to the Boxer Super Run Durban in 2025,” says Lee-Ann Pillay, Head of Department: Marketing at Boxer Superstores. “We love that he has set a clear goal, pushing himself while raising the bar for the rest of the field. We also can’t wait to see Gladwin Mzazi, Andries Sesedi, and Benette Seloyi in action - it promises to be an electrifying elite men’s wave. We wish all our elite athletes the very best for race day and encourage the Durban community to come out and show their support along the route and on the finish line!”

Excitement Building as Comrades Marathon celebrates 60 Days to Race Day

With just two months to go until the 2026 edition of the Comrades Marathon on the 14th of June, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) can announce that preparations for the 99th edition of the race are moving forward smoothly, with a healthy blend of tradition and innovation. While the runners preparing for the approximately 87km ultra-marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg are putting in their final big month of training mileage (and some are running their qualifying marathon before the qualifying cut-off on 4 May), the CMA and its Race Organising Committee (ROC) are hard at work with the planning and logistical preparation that goes into this iconic event.
